On 21 April 2006 the Environmental Protection Agency prosecuted a Pig Farmer at Cavan District Court.
He pleaded guilty to:
• Failing to notify the EPA as soon as practicable of an unauthorised emission and an incident with potential for environmental contamination of surface water.
• Failing to make a record of such incident.
• Failing to maintain the level alarm on the reception tank.
On hearing details of the offences from an EPA inspector and a Senior Engineer from Cavan County Council, Judge McBride imposed fines totalling €1,000 and the EPA’s costs of €9,328 were also awarded.
