Fish Kill on the Cavan River

On the 25th June 2018, the EPA was informed by Irish Water of the release of raw sewage into the Cavan River (in the Cavan Town Bridge area), and that the Inland Fisheries had reported that a fish kill had occurred.

It was established by Irish Water that the primary cause of this incident was an overflow of raw sewage into the Cavan River from an underground tank.  On the on 26/06/2018, this underground tank was emptied and cleaned.

The EPA and Inland Fisheries attended the scene to investigate the incident and samples were taken. The EPA will continue its investigation into this incident and any further action will be taken in line with our enforcement policy. Our priority is to ensure that the necessary infrastructure and management practices are in place to prevent a reoccurrence of this type of incident and protect the environment.
