Fish kill in the Tullamore River

Date released: Sep 05 2018

On the 24th August 2018, the EPA was informed by Irish Water that a fish kill had occurred in the Tullamore River.

Following investigations it is now suspected by Irish Water that the primary cause of this incident is the intermittent leak of raw sewage from a defective sewer network into the underlying stormwater network.

Offaly County Council, Irish Water, the EPA and Inland Fisheries Ireland have inspected the site of the discharge and samples were taken by Offaly County Council. The EPA will continue its investigation into this incident and any further action will be taken in line with our enforcement policy. Our priority is to ensure that the necessary corrective actions are in place to prevent a reoccurrence of this type of incident and protect the environment.

Update 23 October 2018

Offaly County Council and Irish Water completed repairs to the defective sewer network on the 17th September 2018 and no further pollution incidences have been noticed since this repair was carried out.
