EPA Twitter Competition marks World Environment Day 2011

Date released: Jun 02 2011

World Environment Day 2011 takes place this Sunday 5th June 2011.  To mark this day, the EPA is running a competition on Twitter, where followers can win a break at one of the many Green Hotels in Ireland.

To be in with a chance to win a Green Hotel break worth €250, we are asking members of the public to simply follow the EPA on Twitter and, using the hashtag #WEDIreland, send a tweet advising on a positive action they can take on World Environment Day to help protect the environment.

The winner will be picked at random from the tweets received throughout the competition period.  Valid tweets must include:

  1. the hashtag #WEDIreland and
  2. an environmentally friendly idea or message.

The competition runs until 12noon on Wednesday 8th June, and the winner will be announced on Twitter by 3pm that afternoon.  Check out the information on the home page of the EPA website  for full details and terms & conditions.

The theme for World Environment Day 2011 is Forests: Nature At Your Service. Check out the United Nations Environment Programme website http://www.unep.org/wed/ for further information.

Green Hotels
124 businesses in Ireland have now been awarded a Green Hospitality Award, including 94 hotels. The Green Hospitality Programme is an environmental certification standard for the hospitality sector - which includes catering. The Awards are recognised both nationally and internationally as standards that allow members to achieve good environmental performance and allow visitors to choose "Greener" hospitality businesses, knowing that defined criteria are being implemented and monitored.  Over 220 members and award holders have set themselves the target to reduce their environmental footprint where possible in relation to waste, water and energy. Members aim to reduce carbon emissions by reducing energy consumption, preserve scarce water resources and minimise waste production.

Further details, a list of certified Green Hotels, and a Green google map showing our green businesses can be found on the Green Hospitality Award website.
