Progress made in dealing with Kerdiffstown fire

Fire authorities have today (30 January) reported satisfactory progress in dealing with the fire at Kerdiffstown landfill site near Naas. Brigades from Dublin, Kildare, Laois and Wicklow, along with County Kildare Civil Defence, have been on site since 8:30 this morning. Smoke emissions have already been reduced. Fire brigades will remain on site into the evening, and will be returning tomorrow morning (Monday).

The firefighting plan includes dismantling of the 20X40X40 metre pile of burning waste and progressive damping-down of its contents.

Even though good progress is being made, it is expected that complete extinguishment of the fire could take at least a week.

The entire landfill site remains a very dangerous area, and is out-of-bounds for safety reasons. People should not enter it for any reason.
