EPA releases Annual Report for 2010

Date released: Oct 20 2011

“Economic recovery must place Ireland on a secure path to a low carbon and environmentally sustainable future” - EPA  Annual Report for Year Ended 31 December 2010

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today published its Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2010.

In launching the report, Mr Dara Lynott, Acting Director General of the EPA, said:

“2010 was a challenging year in which the EPA worked hard to protect and improve the natural environment despite the difficult economic circumstances. The EPA has a clear focus on making the right decisions for the environment based upon the evidence we gather on the quality of the environment.”

In May this year the EPA underwent a comprehensive Review by an independent and expert Review Group. The Review, which is published on the EPA website, involved an open and transparent process (130 submissions were received, 13 in depth engagements were undertaken with key stakeholders).  Referring to the report Mr Dara Lynott stated that:

“The Review this year was a rigorous and tough process that subjected our work to intense analysis and evaluation; however it was also an invigorating process requiring us to be very clear on all aspects of our activities and to clarify our approach to the future.”

The Review report observed that ‘the achievements of the Agency since its foundation are widely recognised’ and that the EPA has ‘grown and matured, providing considerable benefit for Ireland’s environment, and for the health and well-being of its people’
Dara Lynott, said:

“The review group found that the EPA is a highly efficient and effective public sector organisation which is fit for purpose and can demonstrate value for money and this is supported by our Annual Report published today.   The EPA will continue to adapt to the rapid pace of change by being open to new and innovative ways of protecting and enhancing our environment.   As we point out in the Annual Report, the challenge for all in Ireland will be to make sure that Ireland’s economic recovery, when it comes, places us on a secure path to a low carbon and environmentally sustainable future”.

The EPA Annual Report 2010 is available on the EPA website.
