Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions from EU Emissions Trading Scheme participants decrease for first time since 2013 - Apr 11 2018, 10:27 AM
Ireland’s emissions from the 103 stationary facilities in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme were down by 4.8 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016. This is compared to an increase of approximately 0.3 per cent across Europe.

Lord John Krebs is presenting an EPA Climate Change Lecture at the Mansion House on Tuesday 15th May as part of the National Dialogue on Climate Action and in conjunction with the Royal Irish Academy. In this public lecture, Lord Krebs will discuss the challenges of adapting to climate change and will draw on the UK’s experience since enacting the 2008 Climate Change Act.

The EPA report, Bathing Water Quality in Ireland 2017, has found that the overall quality of Ireland’s bathing waters remains good with 132 of 142 identified waters meeting strict EU standards.

New EPA online tool will assist with nature conservation in Ireland - May 17 2018, 11:15 AM
A new GeoTool has been launched today to assist those involved in Appropriate Assessment. The bespoke tool was developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, to automate and streamline part of the data gathering process needed for Appropriate Assessment.

Kerry Students’ Chewing Gum Video is the Winner of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Story of Your Stuff Competition - May 29 2018, 11:00 AM
The EPA has found the winners of this year’s The Story of Your Stuff competition in Co. Kerry. Amber Pomeranz and Lauren Lehane, students at Presentation Secondary School Milltown, teamed up to tell the story of chewing gum – from its history to how it’s currently manufactured and how innovative ways are being found to reduce its negative impact on the environment after use.

EPA expects drinking water to comply with EU standards by 2020, 16 years after the deadline for compliance - Jun 13 2018, 12:10 AM
The EPA Drinking Water Report 2017, released today, shows that the quality of drinking water in public supplies remains high, though we must continue to invest in and improve the security of supplies if we are to comply with the drinking water health standards and avoid water restrictions, including Boil Water Notices.

We need to move away from fossil fuels, EPA emissions projections show - May 31 2018, 10:30 AM
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) projections released today show that Ireland’s total greenhouse gas emissions will increase from current levels to 2020, underpinned by strong economic growth. This is despite an EU target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent on 2005 levels from the non-Emissions Trading Scheme (non-ETS) sector – agriculture, transport, residential, commercial, non-energy intensive industry and waste. The latest projections show that, at best, Ireland will only achieve a one per cent reduction by 2020 compared to the 20 per cent reduction target.

€600,000 Funding Announcement for Ireland’s Circular Economy Innovators - Jun 14 2018, 11:00 AM
Ireland’s National Waste Prevention Programme supporting transitions to a low-carbon, low-waste future. The EPA has today launched a €600,000 funding programme to support innovators. The Innovation for a Circular Economy Programme will support companies and organisations in Ireland to develop - and demonstrate - consumer and business solutions that will stimulate resource efficiency and the circular economy.

Greater focus on protecting our most pristine waters is needed, says EPA - Jun 20 2018, 11:00 AM
The EPA has today released a new water indicators’ report for Ireland. The 16 indicators in the report provide information on the quality of Ireland’s rivers, lakes, estuaries, beaches and groundwaters.

The National Waste Prevention Programme delivers initiatives and supports to promote Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon, circular economy and provide leadership on national priorities such as food waste prevention. In 2017, €1.8 million was invested in resource efficiency and the sustainable use of resources in Ireland.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to welcome Dr Tom Ryan onto the EPA Board. Dr Ryan took up his new position as Director of the Office of Environmental Enforcement on 25th August 2018.

The GLOBE International Citizen Science Schools’ Programme – Irish schools invited to sign up and participate - Oct 02 2018, 10:30 AM
The EPA and An Taisce today launched the second year of the GLOBE citizen science programme in Ireland. Students in schools that sign up for the 2018-2019 campaign will have the opportunity to learn about the weather and climate and do hands-on science in their locality. The EPA also launched its new citizen science web pages: www.epacitizenscience.ie.

The EPA has today released a progress report on the implementation of the National Hazardous Waste Management Plan (NHWMP) 2014-2020. The report shows that Ireland is making good progress on managing hazardous waste. However, a stronger focus on hazardous waste prevention is required and the development of appropriate infrastructure to allow Ireland to become more self-sufficient in the treatment and management of its hazardous waste.
