The successful candidate will fulfil the role of Scientific Officer III (Level 5) Hydrometrics & Groundwater. The successful candidate will be based in the Athlone office but may be required to carry out hydrometric monitoring anywhere in the country. The role is predominately an outdoor role, and the successful candidate will be part of the hydrometric field monitoring team, measuring river flows, lake and groundwater levels. They will work with colleagues within their wider Hydrometric & Groundwater team to ensure delivery of the hydrometric field work programme. The successful candidate will be required to assess, interpret and validate the hydrometric data gathered in their region and provide technical advice to their line manager and the regional team lead on the hydrometric stations in their area.

The successful candidate will fulfil the role of Scientific Officer III (Level 5) Freshwater Ecologist. The successful candidate will work in the EPA’s Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Unit which undertakes monitoring and assessment of the ecological health of Ireland’s surface water resource. The role will involve extensive fieldwork, and travel away from the designated office location, monitoring surface waters within Ireland, as well as laboratory work, sample and data analysis and reporting.

This research led by University of Galway addressed a critical knowledge gap in how increasing flood risk due to climate change, will affect Irish communities at a local level. It examined future flood hazards and costs, how people understand these risks, and how planning, housing and adaptation policies influence community vulnerability. Using high‑resolution flood modelling, economic damage estimates, housing market analysis, planning data and stakeholder engagement, the project provides new local‑level evidence. The findings show that climate change will expand floodplains, increase uneven economic losses, and that housing markets only partly reflect risk. Perceptions of flood risk vary widely, highlighting the need for clearer communication. The results provide practical evidence to inform planning, infrastructure investment and adaptation, support better risk‑aware policies, and foster community engagement in building climate‑resilient places in Ireland.

Research 514: F-gas Use, Scale and Environment (FUSE4i): An Improved Indicative Inventory for Ireland

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), F-gas, is a human made synthetic, colourless and odourless, non-flammable (GHG). It has the highest 100-year global warming potential (GWP) of all GHGs. This research led by a team in UL analysed SF6 use, conducted stakeholder engagement and used modelling to assess SF6 use, emissions data and Environmental Impact Assessment requirements in the power and semiconductor sectors. The findings highlighted weaknesses in data collection, reporting, and end‑of‑life management of SF6‑containing equipment. The research recommends ‘Best Practice’ emissions reducing alternatives and increased training for safe handling to support policymakers, regulators, and industry in meeting regulatory obligations. The findings also support improved regulation, emission reduction strategies, and circular economy objectives, while noting limitations related to reliance on industry to self‑report and challenges due to incomplete private‑sector data availability.

Position Paper Regulation 27 Consultation to inform development of Draft Guidance for Brownfield soil and stone by-product material incorporating a PFAS screen

The EPA has published a position paper for consultation as part of the development of national guidance for brownfield soil and stone by-product material. The guidance will clarify where brownfield soil and stone can be used as by-product or where it must be safely disposed of. This will assist developers and environmental consultants with brownfield soil by-product notifications. The planned guidance will use pollutant limit values for the protection of human and environmental health based on use scenarios and vulnerabilities of the site. Interim ambient concentrations are being examined for use as pollutant limit values for PFAS.
