Horizon 2020

Following FP7, Horizon 2020 is the EU’s main instrument for funding research and development, which runs from 2014 to 2020.

 Some key figures:

  • At least 60% of the overall Horizon 2020 budget is expected to be related to sustainable development.
  • Climate-related expenditure is expected to exceed 35% of the Horizon 2020 budget, as part of the multi-annual financial framework commitment to allocate 20% of all EU spending to the mainstreaming of climate action.

There are significant opportunities for innovation for businesses, communities and other groups.

There are a variety of funding mechanisms in Horizon 2020 (e.g. individual fellowships, infrastructural awards and collaborative research projects).

We facilitate the successful participation of Irish researchers in Horizon 2020 via our role as National Delegate and Contact Point for Societal Challenge 5 “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials” (Climate Action), in partnership with Enterprise Ireland and the Horizon 2020 National Support Network.

We actively promote, encourage and facilitate the successful participation of Irish researchers in Horizon 2020 via its role as National Delegate and Contact Point for Societal Challenge 5 “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials” (Climate Action), in partnership with Enterprise Ireland.

The Catalogue provides an insight into Irish Companies and Research Organisations active in the field of Environmental Research and will provide support to researchers intending to participate in EU funding calls (Horizon 2020, Water & Climate Joint Programming Initiative and LIFE)

National Working Group 

The EPA has set up a Working Group composed of the Research Offices from third level institutions, other agencies and departments to effectively disseminate information and gather feedback from the Irish research community.

Events

Together with Enterprise Ireland, we are organising roadshows in the Irish universities, as well as other events to disseminate Horizon 2020 information and encourage networking.

If you or have ideas of topics for inclusion in future Work programmes, please contact us. 

You can also influence the contents of future calls by getting involved in other EU initiatives, such as the Joint Programming Initiatives or the European Innovation Partnerships.
