Lakes Monitoring Programme

The Water Framework Monitoring Programme replaced the National Lakes Monitoring Programme in  22 December 2006. In this new Monitoring Programme 226 lakes, representative of all pressures and types, will be examined for a broader range of biological and chemical parameters at a higher frequency than in the past.

The annual surveys of the Shannon lakes and the biological and physico-chemical monitoring of selected acid sensitive lakes and their feeder streams in Donegal, Galway and Wicklow will continue. These are carried out to assess water quality and trends, particularly in relation to eutrophication and acidification.
