Incident at Castletown wastewater Pump Station near Celbridge, Co. Kildare, 22 September 2023
Uisce Éireann notified the EPA that a section of sewer conveying sewage from Castletown pump station near Celbridge, Co. Kildare to the waste water treatment plant in Leixlip burst at approximately 06:00 on the 22nd September 2023. Uisce Éireann advised this resulted in the release of sewage to the River Liffey for approximately 50 minutes.
The operators of Leixlip drinking water plant, which abstracts water from the River Liffey downstream of the location of the burst sewer, are monitoring the raw water entering the plant to make sure there is no risk to drinking water supplies.
Uisce Éireann is working to repair the sewer and is tankering sewage from the pump station to the treatment plant. However, there is a risk that sewage may discharge to the River Liffey while these repairs are being carried out.
The EPA is investigating this incident and conducted an inspection of the area on the afternoon of 22nd September.
Repairs were completed to the burst sewer main on Sunday 24th September.
Updates on progress in repairing the sewer are available on the Uisce Éireann website at https://www.water.ie/ or through the Uisce Éireann customer care helpline at 1800 278 278.
