Incident at Atlantic Pond Wastewater Pumping Station in Cork City

Updated 28th January 2025

On the evening of the 28th January 2025, Uisce Éireann reported to the EPA an incident resulting from a significant equipment failure at the Atlantic Pond Wastewater Pumping Station. The incident caused the sewer network to backup, which resulted in localised flooding of wastewater in the Monaghan Road and Centre Park Road area.

To minimise the potential for wastewater flooding in these areas, Uisce Éireann turned off three pumping stations in Cork City, giving rise to overflows of wastewater to the River Lee from these pumping stations.

The EPA is investigating this incident and conducted an inspection of the area on the 29th January 2025.

Uisce Éireann is actively working to resolve the problem at the Atlantic Pond Wastewater Pumping Station. Uisce Éireann have taken immediate actions to restore the pumping of wastewater through the network to the wastewater treatment plant, and this has ceased the overflow from the three pumping stations in Cork City. Further significant works will be required at the Atlantic Pond Wastewater Pumping Station to restore it to normal operations.

The EPA has requested Uisce Éireann to sample the River Lee to establish the extent of the impact. The EPA will continue to investigate this matter and the site inspection report will be available on the EPA website (https://leap.epa.ie/ ) in due course.

Updates on progress in restoring the pumping station to normal operating conditions are available on the Uisce Éireann website at Operational works ongoing at Atlantic Pond wastewater pumping station, Cork City | News Updates | Uisce Eireann  or through the Uisce Éireann customer care helpline at 1800 278 278.
