Project Abstract
The research agenda proposed here for a postdoctoral fellowship is interdisciplinary, multi-themed, and takes a holistic approach to transform our understanding of how the signature of climate change (e.g. temperature, salinity, and the carbonate system) is recorded in the Nordic Seas and transferred into geologic archives. Given the uncertainties associated with available palaeoceanographic tools, we anticipate that our findings will provide a major advancement in the field of Palaeoceanography. Furthermore, we expect that the application of our calibrations to past changes in Arctic climate will improve validation experiments with general climate models to calibrate the response of the climate system to high magnitude changes in the Arctic. Given the growing consensus in the scientific community that current trends in Arctic amplification will increase the frequency of extreme weather events over northern mid-latitudes, we anticipate that our findings will have immediate implications for predicting future climate scenarios relevant to Ireland, Europe and beyond.
