Project Abstract
This study aims to conduct a detailed assessment of current national and international atmospheric research activities, and to evaluate the performance of the research outputs in addressing the major environmental challenges facing society today: air quality and climate change. The study will perform a gap analysis of national and international research activities, highlighting important processes that are poorly understood but that have serious implications for the atmosphere on national, regional and global scales. The outputs of existing research systems will be evaluated in terms of policy relevance and societal impact. Following the assessment of existing research infrastructures, a pathway will be outlined to synthesise national research activities into an integrated research system combining state-of-the-art earth, atmosphere and space observations with advanced data and modelling technologies. The resultant outputs will be tailored to inform effective policy and engage the public meaningfully, thereby invoking behavioural change. The integrated system will be designed to feed into international research projects, addressing major environmental challenges on national, regional and global scales. The harmonisation of research efforts nationally and internationally will be a key tool in understanding atmospheric processes governing climate and air quality and a vital step in preventing irreversible climate change
