Project Abstract

Grasslands have the potential to sequester significant amounts of carbon. This could help counteract the current rise in atmospheric CO2. However, overgrazing has resulted in Californian grasslands being invaded by annual exotic grass species which may not have the same capacity for carbon sequestration as native perennial grasses. My project determines the contribution of annual and perennial grasses to carbon sequestration in the soil. Field research will be conducted in annual and perennial grass plots that have already been established at UC Davis. The mechanisms that underlie carbon and nitrogen allocation to the roots will be investigated by laboratory-based experiments
