Project Abstract
The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) defines a list of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) that must be prioritised by national observational programs. ECVs are physical, chemical, or biological variables (or groups of variables) that critically contribute to the characterisation of Earths atmosphere, oceanic and terrestrial environments. Vetted, timely, and purposeful observations of ECVs are required in order to understand the characteristics of current climate, to assist avoiding adverse consequences of future climate changes and ultimately support decision making at national, regional and local levels. Analysis of ECVs are generally synthesised and disseminated in the form of a climate status report (e.g. The Status of Ireland Climate 2012) and it has been recommended this is updated frequently and include a suite of ECVs relevant for numerous applications.
The proposed project will build on and update the 2012 climate status report by, 1) synthesising additional analysis of ECVs undertaken since the previous status report and 2) exploiting additional data streams (e.g. remote sensing platforms/reanalysis data) to include a larger suite of ECVs relevant for Ireland. Progress in implementing the GCOS recommendations in Ireland since the last report will also be assessed, and additional dissemination channels (i.e. Climate Ireland) will be utilised.
