Project Abstract
This ambitious project will produce a disruptive technology to bring lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) batteries into the circular economy. We will develop a single integrated process taking post-consumer battery waste and transforming it into new battery material. Cobalt and lithium are finite mined resources and are not currently recycled in the EU, representing a major loss of strategic raw materials. This process will enable Ireland to meet its 2030 Climate Action Plan goals for electric vehicles and enable the country to meet its waste and recycling targets for batteries. It will have a major beneficial societal impact on communities involved in cobalt mining where child labour and human rights abuses are widespread.
