Project Abstract
This project will use existing data on the carbonate system in Irish coastal and shelf waters, garnered from current and past research projects and on-going marine monitoring, as well as collecting new data, to establish the CO2 sink/source nature of the western Irish shelf and adjacent shelf areas at different seasons. In addition to the inorganic carbon parameters already being monitored and measured , the project will establish a monitoring strategy for organic carbon parameters to complete the overview of the shelf carbon system. For nearshore systems, the project will build on and expand existing datasets to look at the sink/source nature of areas of macro-algal and seagrass beds at different seasons, providing initial estimates of their contribution to the overall shelf sink/source, and with a view to contributing to the 'blue carbon' strategy for helping to combat climate change.
