Project Abstract

Grasslands are central to the economy and culture of Ireland, but their role is dramatically threatened by an increasingly unpredictable climate. Severe drought and flood alternate irregularly causing huge losses. Above ground productivity is supported by a diverse below ground community of microbes living in plant roots. This proposal will reveal these invisible but vital communities and explain how the network of connections between plants and microbes support the ability of grasslands to resist and recover from drought and flood. This knowledge will offer a novel baseline to predict and improve grassland resilience to extreme weather events.
