Project Abstract

Long term river flows are fundamental to understanding risks posed by hydro-climatic extremes of floods and droughts and sustainable management of water sources. They are essential for tracking emerging climate signals, contextualising recent extremes and understanding the drivers of hydrological variability and change. In Ireland the deficiency of long river flow records and confounding factors of catchment change from human activities mean that such foundational data are lacking. This creates uncertainty and limits the potential for evidence based decision making in key sectors centrally important to human well being, the economy and the environment. This research seeks to rectify this situation by developing probabilistic daily river flow reconstructions for 38 catchments across the island.
