Project Abstract

The aim of FLARES is to develop a more accurate approach to estimating emissions from upland burning in Ireland to improve national GHG and air quality inventory estimates, and also enhance knowledge of the physical and human environmental impacts of uncontrolled burn events. This will be achieved through exploitation of state-of-the-art approaches to identifying burned areas, quantifying the nature of the material that burned, and estimating atmospheric changes from satellite data, with laboratory and field-based data to derive emission factors associated with specific controlled burn events. Estimates of emissions from selected upland burn events will be calculated, with historic fires from 2015 integrated with those that occur during the project (2020-2021). The focus on freely-available satellite data will enable development of operational-ready approaches to estimating the impact of upland burning on Irish air quality, with field and laboratory work enabling Irish-specific emission factors to be derived, thereby enhancing the quality of existing modelling and forecasting activities.
