Project Abstract
Flooding causes enormous crop losses each year, with an estimated annual cost of $60 billion worldwide. Global climate change will cause more severe and frequent floods in Ireland and other parts of the globe, while also promoting the growth of pathogens that cause disease-related crop losses. The combination of flooding and crop diseases is a major threat to food security. The proposed project will provide the new knowledge, as well as the genetic material that are needed to improve oilseed rape, one of the most important crops worldwide, and ensure that future varieties are more resilient to flooding and pathogens.
