Project Abstract

Deep Energy Retrofit (DR) adopts a whole building approach and achieves much larger energy savings than conventional energy renovations. DR includes the installation of mechanical ventilation, high levels of insulation and uses renewable energy technologies, to achieve building energy ratings (BER) of at least A3 and building air tightness levels lower than 5 m3/h.m2. Ireland�s 4th NEEAP identifies DR as a solution to achieve savings in the Irish residential built environment. The impact of DR measures on exposure to indoor air pollutants in domestic dwellings in the developed world is poorly understood. This area of research, unlike for ambient air pollution, is partly challenged by our lack of understanding of the causal associations between exposure to indoor air pollutants (IAPs) and the relative absence of IAQ measurements and indices.This study aims to make a significant contribution to building energy research, by being the first Irish and international study to complete a health impact assessment (HIA) and health economic evaluation on DR in domestic dwellings.
