Project Abstract
HealthyAIR focuses on air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and public health in Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is under provisioned for air pollution monitoring. While HCMC is 33 times larger than Dublin, it has only 1 real time air monitoring station and Dublin has 15 such stations. This project will see 6 real time air monitoring stations installed in HCMC. They will monitor the air pollutants of O3, CO, SO2, NO2, PM2.5, in addition to weather readings such as temperature and humidity. We will create an air pollution and greenhouse gas emission inventory for HCMC. This will be created by obtaining emissions information from traffic, residential and biogenic sources. Statistical and machine learning analyses will be performed to determine the effects of air pollutants on public health. Air pollution forecasting models will be developed using multiple data sources including climate, air pollution and traffic data. Due to the large quantity of data available we will develop new multi-modal machine learning models using deep learning to make highly accurate predictions. These models will form the basis of publications and also a mobile app to inform the public of pollution levels in HCMC. The air emissions policy will be developed with findings from the greenhouse gas, air pollution forecasting and public health analyses. Through dedicated workshops in Vietnam and Dublin, key policy makers, government officials and environmental scientists will be informed of air pollution problems in order to implement policy changes. This is a high impact project from humanitarian, climate action and governance perspectives. It will have a long-lasting impact for the people of HCMC. In addition, it lays the foundation for future air pollution and climate action projects.
