Project Abstract

The MoSt grass growth (MoSt GG) model is a dynamic and mechanistic model predictinggrass growth for different farms with varying soil types, weather and grazing management. It has been tested on a number of sites across the country and is now being used as a grass growth predictor on approximately 55 commercial and research farms. In 2020, 30 farms will have weather station positioned on them and this will allow further improvement in model predictions. The objective of this PhD is to develop the soil sub-model of the MoSt GG model. The work will be set out to evaluate the MoSt prediction with the on farm weather station data. Prediction using the current Met Eireann weather data feeds will also be evaluated against the weather station predictions. The model ability to predict soil moisture (surplus or deficits) and its impact on drought or flooding depending on farm soil type will also be investigated. Both soil and water sub model within the MoSt GG will be adjusted depending on the evaluation of the model against real-time data. An evaluation of the N sub model (N leaching and grass N uptake and efficiency) will to be conducted across different soil types, seasons and years ensuring the accuracy of the model across environments. Machine learning will be integrated across the Pasturebase Ireland data to highlight and improve the model weaknesses (i.e. to improve model prediction a certain times of the year when weather conditions are atypical). It is envisaged that the model will be used to assist in answering major industry questions such as the interaction between management soil type and N leaching or the prediction of drought and management interactions during these periods.
