Project Abstract

The exact determination of size and distribution of Marine and Coastal sediments provides powerful information about sediment transport dynamics, that can be linked to coastal and deep ocean currents, estuary systems, as well as sediment deposition and erosion events that are linked to extreme weather and climate change. Currently the West of Ireland does not possess a functioning particle size analyzer of high technological standard, which requires researchers from NUI Galway, GMIT, UL and the MI to outsource these measurements at high cost, which severely limits research projects that are linked to smaller to medium scale budgets, and effectively eliminates this tool for postgraduate training and research opportunities. We are applying for the Mastersizer MS3000, which affords the latest laser diffraction technology from Malvern instruments, adopted as standard by many industrial companies in Ireland and worldwide. The MS3000 is the most reliable, technically advanced and versatile instrument on the market allowing applications in multiple fields of research that other instruments cannot offer.
