Project Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a relatively new manufacturing technique where material in the form of powder, filament or liquid is added layer by layer until a near net shape part is formed. Initial research shows that AM has huge potential to become a significantly more environmentally friendly manufacturing method when compared to more traditional methods. However, AM is not without its limitations as materials and other inputs to the process can contain high embodied energy, meaning that they can actually be less efficient if not used correctly but the work energy savings through AM have been cited at potentially between 5-27% depending on certain operating scenarios. Thus, this challenge team aim to firstly quantify the typical total energy consumption of current AM processes (3D printing) and following mapping, the team will identify specific operation, control or process changes which can be made to reduce the overall environmental impact of modern manufacturing. While Depuy Synthes are providing access to manufacturing test lines with experienced technicians for this project, the team are conscious that manufacturing makes up a huge proportion of Irelands industry and the findings will be disseminated through research publications, industry workshops hosted by IMR and informed policy and standards.
