Quantifying the potential Impact of Carbon Sequestration Policies - A Regional Analysis for Irish Agriculture using the CAPRI model

Project Abstract
Despite the existence of national and EU Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction targets, the Irish agriculture sector, especially the dairy sector, is projected to continue to grow in size up to 2030. This would lead to an increase in Irish agricultural GHG emissions to over 21�Mt�CO2eq�in the absence of mechanisms to reduce agricultural emissions and increase carbon sequestration.
Mitigation actions to reduce agricultural emissions and increase carbon sequestration have been identified and could provide a pathway that allows the sector to reduce its emissions. However, the achievement of the identified mitigation will require action on the part of farmers. From a socioeconomic perspective, the willingness of farmers to support such carbon sequestration actions is not well understood.
The research supported by this scholarship will examine the factors which determine the adoption of carbon sequestration strategies by farmers in Ireland. In particular,�research on land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) options will deepen the understanding of the determinants of forestry planting on farms in Ireland. Derived LULUCF scenarios will be simulated using the CAPRI (Common Agricultural Policy Regionalised Impact) modelling system to examine the uptake of carbon sequestration strategies on the Irish agriculture sector in terms of emissions, economic impacts and change in production at both a national and EU NUTS II regional level.�
The scholarship will use data from the Teagasc National Farm Survey (NFS) a nationally representative stratified sample of the farm population in Ireland. The NFS is part of the EU Farm Accountancy Data Network, but also collects a broader range of data, particularly data that is relevant to environmental sustainability.
The knowledge created will contribute to improving carbon sequestration on farms and assist in the development of policies (scheme design) that will put Ireland�s agricultural GHG emissions on a downward path.
