Project Abstract
This research proposes to provide an overview of best practice in policies and technologies for the heating
sector. It has a particular focus on studies that are relevant to Ireland, which has struggled to meet EU-level
targets for renewable heating (SEAI 2019). The Final Report will develop a series of recommendations that
provide informed guidance on promising pathways for policy and technology.
The study focusses on the residential sector, and analyses emerging technologies and policies designed to
foster adoption. Importantly, this study will provide an overview of important co-benefits associated with
improvements in the heat sector, as well as some of the trade-offs.
The research team possess a wealth of expertise in studying the energy sector. This includes the analysis of
current energy policies in Ireland and abroad, experimental studies of the effectiveness of energ y efficiency in
consumer decision making and the analysis of emerging technologies that could foster greater energy
savings in the heating sector. Understanding each research area is vital to providing a holistic overview of the
current sector which will be reflected in the final output.
