Project Abstract

Effective response to the challenge of climate change now requires an urgent global transition to a post-carbon society, such that the ongoing accumulation of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change is first halted and then reversed. Success in this transition will allow human society to flourish within its most critical planetary boundary, namely that of a stable, livable, climate. Conversely, without rapid mitigation of the extent of human-caused climate change, attempts at adaptation might be completely overwhelmed by the speed and severity of climate impacts. This is a global issue, whose resolution must ultimately rely on global action; but the details of transition can still only be defined and navigated under the control and direction of local communities, institutions and societies. This project will study the current state and available future pathways for Irelands post-carbon transition. The project is distinctive in its rigorous commitment to characterising the required transition in a way that is not merely aspirational, but rather is demonstrably and quantitatively commensurate with the scale of the global challenge, and genuinely consistent with both climate science and global justice.
