Project Abstract

Tellus produces a range of geoscience data as part of its national geochemistry and airborne geophysics programmes relevant to the assessment and monitoring of land-based carbon stocks, wetlands and peatlands. These datasets could be developed to inform a current baseline status of soil carbon and peat extents regionally, to understand regional geological controls on soil carbon and to measure or monitor future change given mitigation measures such as land use reform. Climate change and agricultural intensification policies are likely to place physical and chemical pressures on soil resilience, increasing risks of loss of soil carbon. To date, there has been one postdoc research project focusing on soil carbon and mapping peat extents. We are considering funding externally and developing capabilities in-house to develop regional soil carbon and peat depth models.
