Project Abstract
Tourism is unique - it is composed of a broad range of interlinked activities that make up the industry, ranging from accommodation to travel and from activity to ancillary and support structures. Because of this, it has a complex matrix of potential impacts on various aspects of the environment. Building on the team?s previous EPA funded project this research will operationalise the DIT-ACHIEV model, testing it in a real situation, and thereby moving towards establishing it as the national benchmark tool for the mitigation of impacts and management of tourism in a sustainable manner. The direct outputs of this project are fourfold:? A fully tested and operationalised DIT-ACHIEV Model of Sustainable Tourism Indicators;? Dissemination of the model (through national / regional workshops), and its positioning as the national benchmark for sustainable tourism management;? Academic publications, to promote the model; ? Professional publications / manuals to assist implementation. In addition the following outputs will be achieved? Networking and building of research capacity in the area of sustainable tourism within the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism? Feasibility testing for the development of a computer assisted version of the model.
