Project Abstract

The molecular ecology of the grey squirrel in Ireland was studied by analysing 5 microsatellites in 349 samples from 7 populations. The Irish grey squirrel population is significantly differentiated into subpopulations at both a local and a national scale. There was evidence of sex biased breeding dispersal but not of sex biased natal dispersal or inbreeding. Grey squirrels in 3 populations surrounding Clongowes Wood were trapped in spring of 2003-2005. Three 14 day culls were conducted in Clongowes Wood in April June and July 2003. Population recovery was monitored in Clongowes Wood in February and June of 2004 and 2005 by trapping. Only 1 tagged immigrant grey squirrel was detected in Clongowes Wood from 2003-2005. Genetic analysis indicated that the Clongowes Wood populations of 2004 and 2005 are derived largely from survivors of the cull in 2003 and not from immigrants from surrounding sites. Population recovery was predicted by a model incorporating high fecundity and low mortality with or without immigration. This model indicated that an effective immunocontraceptive could control grey squirrel population size.
