Project Abstract
This project will ? review the international literature on forestry impacts on hydrochemistry, hydrology and ecology? assemble a database of relevant Irish data on forest-surface interactions (hydrochemistry & ecology)? collect hydrochemical, hydromorphological and ecological data from 6 catchments (3 intensively to estimate nutrient loads) ? analyse data to establish controls and influences on impacts? develop modelling tools to predict impacts and design control measures? predict the future impact of forestry on hydro-ecology. This project will produce? An up-to-date literature review of forest impacts on ecology with particular attention to the performance and design of buffer strips? A database of Irish data on forest-surface interactions (hydrochemistry & ecology)? Data sets from 6 catchments, 3 of which will be intensively instrumented. ? Analysis of factors influencing forestry impacts on ecology with a conceptual model.A data set of the performance of buffer strips in the research catchment.? A set of design guidelines for the planning, construction and maintenance of buffer strips.? A prediction of the future impacts, nationally, of forestry on ecology.
