Project Abstract

The behavioural strand of Phase II of the EPA/ESRI Research Programme included a randomised controlled trial (RCT) which aims to increase radon testing rates among households in high risk areas. . One aim in Phase III would be to use to findings of the Phase II RCT to identify the best communication strategy to encourage radon remediation rates, once testing rates have been increased and a national grant scheme has been costed. . Officers from the EPA’s Analytics Team are currently working with researchers from TCD and GSI to refine and validate a new radon risk map. The ESRI’s BRU have been invited to join the steering group for this project in order to contribute to the map’s development. Given this map’s relevance for the proposed RCT, our aim would be to ensure the map communicates risk in a behaviourally-informed manner, as using the psychological literature on risk communication is likely to maximise the map’s potential to motivate testing and remediation.
