Project Abstract
BRIAR will use very high spatial resolution radar imagery in the X,C and L bands acquired, over one year, over a test site centred over Fermoy, Co. Cork. This suite of data will be used in conjunction with extensive field work measuring hedgerow and scrub properties to build a model that can estimate biomass in these non-forest areas from radar backscatter and properties extracted from the radar image data. Non-forest woody biomass across a range of habitats will be modelled. Radar, as an active sensor, is largely unaffected by weather and our state of the art TerraSAR-x satellite data with a 25cm resolution is ideal for identifying and characterising even very small targets in the Irish Landscape. The results of these models will be tested against independent ground truth from our field campaign and existing estimates of non-forest biomass distribution in the country will be used to design and cost a national inventory for carbon stock change reporting in non-forest woody biomass. The likely accuracy of this inventory approach at the national scale will be ascertained.
