Project Abstract

The main objective of the research is to determine the contribution of both wild and managed pollinators to pollination services for crops and wild plants in Ireland. In order to determine these contributions, I will conduct an experiment to assess how effective wild and managed pollinators are at pollinating plants in crops and semi-natural grasslands. I will use this information, as well as data on current crop yields, to calculate the economic value of pollinators in Ireland. I will also conduct a second experiment to determine whether managed and wild species are competing. Finally, I will distribute a citizen survey to determine the current public understanding of the role and value of pollinators in Ireland. The conclusions produced from this study would have a profound influence on both policy and pollinator management techniques in both agricultural and natural systems, ensuring sustainable protection of Irelands natural capital into the future.
