Project Abstract

It is proposed to study the availability of N and P in a range of composts based on a number of source materials and with different degrees of biological stability. Plant growth experiments in containers will compare each compost with inorganic fertiliser for growth and uptake of N and P. Recently developed analytical and incubation methods will be assessed as predictors for nutrient availability by regressing analytical results against plant growth and nutrient uptake. The composts will be screened for their capacity to suppress plant disease. Suppressive composts will be tested for their ability to suppress specific pathogens in cropping situations. The final report will provide a basis for developing guidelines for the environmentally safe use of compost in agriculture and for the inclusion of compost in Statutory Instrument 378 . The results will provide a knowledge base for the development of specific compost based products (Designer Composts). The results will also be presented in four peer-reviewed Journal publications. The project will introduce new techniques to Ireland in the areas of compost analysis and plant disease suppression. Two postgraduates will earn higher degrees and be trained to be effective researchers.
