Project Abstract
Nanotechnology is an emerging technology which has the potential to impact on all aspects of life and the economy, and is expected to form the basis of several technological innovations and advances in the 21st century. In order to compete on a global scale, Irish-based enterprises will continue to embrace nanotechnology over the coming years, and this will be encouraged at the highest levels to ensure Irelands competitiveness in the global market. Therefore, it is anticipated that nanotechnology based research, enterprises and products will become more widely established and available in Ireland. Whilst advances in nanotechnology are expected to lead to significant societal benefit, there is increasing concern that the unique properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) may result in potential hazards for both humans and the environment. Currently there exists a lack of information regarding the concentration, toxicological effect and environmental fate of ENMs in natural waters and this lack of information contributes to a significant and growing level of public concern which may limit acceptance of the potential benefits of this technology. The proposed research aims to bridge some of these knowledge gaps, and data generated will prove instrumental in the formation of policy. This project is expected to generate the following outputs: Project webpage, updated routinely to include output such as presentations and publications in peer and non-peer reviewed publications, media engagement. A minimum of two published peer reviewed papers. Final Report and Synthesis Report. A two-page report summarizing the main findings of the project for inclusion on the EPA website. Presentation(s) at high-level national and international conferences Non-peer reviewed dissemination newspaper articles, radio and/or television interviews. Social media campaign on Facebook and twitter. Dissemination through the award-winning Outreach Programme at the Ryan Institute
