Project Abstract
This research seeks to operate, develop and improve Irelands Greenhouse Gas Monitoring and transboundary air pollution monitoring network. This network makes high precision measurements of methane and carbon dioxide as well as black carbon, particle number, particle scattering, ion chemistry and particulate matter. In addition to operation of the existing network , new instruments will be validated and installed QA procedures and data visualisation techniques will be improved. Real time instrument diagnostics will be deployed remotely in order to improve measurement integrity. Compliancy of site infrastructure with internationally recognised research programmes will be ensured and the latest developments in these standards will be implemented at stations. Data will be analysed, submitted to relevant bodies and published. Research highlights of this work include source apportionment (distinguishing between fossil fuel and biomass burning) of black carbon at two sites and supply of validated methane and carbon dioxide data as prior input for inversion model estimates of Irelands emissions. These atmospheric measurements are also used to validate and reduce uncertainties in climate models.
