Project Abstract
In this desk study we propose to investigate the technical environmental and economic factors surrounding the use of ethanol-diesel blends (E-Diesel) in the transport sector in Ireland. The use of E-Diesel provides an easy route to the introduction of biofuels and does not require modifications to engines or fuel delivery infrastructure. Extensive research on the use of E-Diesel has been carried out in the USA Australia and elsewhere and a number of trials have successfully demonstrated the use of E-Diesel in the existing transportation fleet. In addition to providing a lower carbon renewable component to the fuel ethanol also oxygenates and alters the combustion characteristics of diesel reducing particulate CO NOx and other emissions. This contrasts with other diesel replacement biofuels which generally produce higher emissions than diesel fuel. We will conduct a detailed literature review and will analyse and synthesise available data to determine the feasibility of using E-Diesel in Ireland. We will particularly focus on quantifying the environmental benefits of using E-Diesel and will develop emission factors for CO2 and other emissions. We will engage with possible nice markets to determine the market potential for E-Diesel and will widely disseminate the results of the study.
