Project Abstract
Pharmaceuticals play a pivotal role in human and animal health. The ever-increasing use and availability of pharmaceuticals in the last decade have led to the contamination of surface water ecosystems (rivers, lakes and canals) from ng/L to ?g/L concentrations. The environmental fate and toxicological implications of many pharmaceuticals and their breakdown products remain generally unknown. However, they are regarded as contaminants of emerging concern to both humans and the environment. This project will develop and use passive (long-term continuous) and grab (snapshot) sampling techniques in conjunction with effect based biomonitoring tools and chromatographic methods to assess the occurrence, movement and impact that pharmaceuticals may have on Irish surface water catchments. Additionally, this project will evaluate, implement and assess the efficacy of strategies to mitigate the impact of these pharmaceutical pollutants in Irish waters.
