Project Abstract
In terms of climate predictions and radiative forcing the largest uncertainty lies with the aerosol effect and, in particular, with the aerosol indirect effect. Notwithstanding the role of dynamics, the major source of this uncertainty is related to the difficulties in quantifying the effect of organics on cloud droplet number and size. It is proposed to further develop the existing aerosol-cloud-chemistry process model at NUI, Galway to improve our capability to model aerosols containing complex organic compounds. Based on model results multi-component aerosol-cloud-chemistry parameterisations will be implemented in a regional climate model (RCM) to quantify the effect of organics on and provide better climate predictions for the North Atlantic and Western European regional climate.
