Project Abstract
The proposed project, EFFORT, aims to produce accurate pollutant and greenhouse gas emission inventories and fuel consumption statistics for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) in Ireland. Initially the proposed research will complete an extensive literature review of the state of knowledge of Emissions from NRMMs. This work will then inform the following work package which will develop a suitable methodology for the estimation of the fuel use, air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use NRMMs in Ireland to provide an addition to Irelands national emission inventories. The emission inventory will be developed in a number of steps. Initially the national NRMM engine population will be calculated by examining available data, activity levels for the NRMMs will be estimated and the NRMMs will be attributed to equipment categories. Following this the emission factors will be assigned for NRMMs in accordance with guidance documents. An optimised GIS tool will then be developed to produce county level inventories for the NAEI and for air quality modelling purposes. The bottom-up methodology developed to produce NRMM emission inventories for Ireland will be optimised. Finally the model will be adjusted to provide forecasts and back casting of NRMM emission trends in Ireland.
