Project Abstract
Recent high levels of economic growth and consumptionhave led to increasing pressures on the environment inIreland. The growing volume of waste being produced is aparticularly visible manifestation of these processes. As aconsequence the effective management of waste inIreland has become increasingly important for policymakers and householders (Davies 2003). Surveys ofpublic opinion identify a population concerned about thequality of the environment including waste but few peopletake actions that would help to protect or enhance theirenvironment (see Drury Research 2000 2003). Thesesurveys have included indicators such as levels ofrecycling but there has been no in-depth analysis ofattitudes towards and behaviour in relation to wastemanagement. This report is a synthesis of the findings ofthe research project Environmental Attitudes andBehaviour: Values Actions and Waste Management thatsought to address this gap in research. Detailed reportsfrom each stage of the project can be accessed at:http://www.tcd.ie/Geography/Abt_06(EPA).html.
