Project Abstract
While no GM crops are currently grown in Ireland, it is pragmatic to assume that farmers will soon be afforded the choice of GM varieties suited to the Irish agri-environment. Most probably these will include GMHT maize and oilseed rape. This raises concern over the ecological impacts associated with the use of these crops. The goal of this project is to address this issue through a critical assessment of international GMHT-based studies. Project outcomes will build on work currently funded by the EPA, DAF and Teagasc to assist policy decision-making regarding relationships between biodiversity and GM crop cultivation in Ireland. Owing to the emotive nature of GM crop research, all project outcomes will be peer reviewed prior to dissemination. The principle modes of communication will be through an interim and final report to the EPA, a Teagasc end of project report, a scientific publication and on the project website www.gmoInfo.ie. A workshop of policy-makers, international and national scientists and interest groups will be hosted to assist in research capacity building and provide strategic support to the project. Additional dissemination will be achieved through the Teagasc advisory service and the popular press.
