Project Abstract
Challenges exist with regard to environmental healthin that there is a critical need to form strongerpartnerships between the various agencies andmedical specialists in activities that will further thescience education and health of the community.Following controversial licensing decisions by theEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2005 aseries of meetings was held between the EPA and theHealth Service Executive (HSE) in an effort to clarifythe different roles of each organisation with respect tothe protection of public health. The EPA also haddiscussions with the Institute of Public Health (IPH)and with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) ona similar theme. Following these meetings aMemorandum of Understanding (MOU) was agreedand signed by both the HSE and the EPA. Also inorder to advance the area of environment and healththe EPA through the Environmental Research Centre(ERC) agreed to fund a postdoctoral researchfellowship. The results from that fellowship arereported here.
