Project Abstract

The aim of the proposed research plan is to develop an oriented basic research programme within the scope of energy security and environmental sustainability, a strategic area of scientific endeavor that concerns the future competitiveness of industry and enterprise in the State. This is particularly so considering the size and continuing growth of the CleanTech sector and the inexorable shift in industry from liquid commodities to gases. The proposal involves a world-class collaborative research team of the highest quality and is of a high standard of excellence in terms of the oriented basic research into modelling of molecular binding sites and the crystal engineering of novel nanoporous sorbents for the uptake, purification/separation, and storage of important commodity gases such as carbon dioxide and natural gas. Furthermore, the programme will contribute to developing the capability for undertaking future oriented basic research in the State as it involves promoting education and the training of individuals in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Technology (STEM). The long-term relevance of this project to industrial competitiveness, coupled with economic, intellectual property and health benefits, make this research programme strategically important to the areas of CleanTech and Renewable Energy.
