Project Abstract

Through this short research project, we aim to develop a clearer, shared, understanding of our work in this area, and to identify: how our work protects the environment, contributes to sustainable economic growth and encourages innovation for the development of a green economy; those things that we should be doing, or doing more of, as agencies in order to more strongly support these outcomes. As sustainable economic growth is a very broad area, a particular focus of this project will be on how the work of the agencies can support transformational innovation, for example: innovation in systems or technologies that can take regulated companies beyond compliance; innovation that enables businesses to grow within environmental limits and to contribute to a sustainable economy; innovation that results in new products or services that promote green growth 1. Write-ups of the findings of the two reviews detailed above. This will feed in to the workshop, so could be presented as a document, slideshow, or in another format, to be agreed with SEPA. 2. An analysis and brief write-up of the outputs of the workshop. This should focus on the key areas of discussion and in particular on any agreed recommendations for future action. 3. A final report, which synthesises the above. It is anticipated that this report will include the following: examples of current best practice in the UK and Ireland, including useful tools and approaches to sustainable economic growth in general, as well as specific to supporting innovation; good examples of current best practice including useful tools and approaches to sustainable economic growth in general, as well as specific to supporting innovation; any current gaps in knowledge or practice identified; opportunities for collaboration in this area; specific initiatives that could be taken forward at an individual agency level; a draft plan for future collaboration and work in this area, including potential future projects under the ShARE programme.
