Project Abstract

The purpose of the Water Framework Directive (WFD)(Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament andof the Council of 23 October 2000) is to establish aframework for the protection of inland surface waterstransitional waters coastal waters and groundwater (Box1.1). A component of this framework is the developmentof a Register of Protected Areas containing land areasthat have been designated as requiring special protectionunder specific Community legislation for the protectionof their surface water and groundwater or for theconservation of habitats and species directly dependingon water. For each River Basin District the Register orRegisters of Protected Areas must be kept under reviewand up to date (Water Framework Directive Article 6).The complete Register of Protected Areas therefore has anumber of components and these are set out in theDirective within Annex IV. It includes water abstractionsites designated salmonid and shellfish watersdesignated bathing waters and nutrient-sensitive areas(see Appendix 1).This project entitled i?Identification and Ranking ofNature Conservation Designated Areas where the Statusof Water is an Important Factori? sought to assist theestablishment of that other part of the Register coveringareas designated for the protection of habitats or specieswhere the maintenance or improvement of the status ofwater is an important factor in their protection.
